President Nixon resigns, 1974
America’s President Richard M. Nixon announces his intention to resign in an evening televised address. Nixon bowed to pressure with impeachment proceedings against him for involvement in Watergate espionage and conspiracy. He became the first President in American history to resign.

Beijing Olympics commence, 2008

Officially known as the games of the 24th Olympiad, the Beijing (China) Summer Olympic games commenced this day in 2008. The Olympic Games saw Michael Phelps break the record for most gold medals in one Olympics after winning gold in 8 swimming events. It also saw Usain Bolt setting a world record in 100, 200, and 4x100 meters relay.
