ASUU: No re-negotiation, hopes of strike ending tomorrow shattered

ASUU yesterday rejected Federal Government’s new offer of Enhanced Academic Allowances and insisted that Federal Government should implement the 2009 agreement in full.

Dr Nasir Fagge, national president of ASUU, said that after consultations with branch chairmen of the union on the new government offer, members rejected it saying it amounts to re-negotiations, the opinion of the branch chairmen is that the 2009 agreement should just be implemented rather than making new offers.
In Benin City, ASUU Benin zone yesterday expressed the determination of members to stay at home for up to 10 years rather than call off the strike if the Federal Government continues to avoid the implementation of the agreement it reached with the union in 2009.

Speaking through their zonal coordinator, Dr Ighalo Sunny, they described as a shame government’s refusal to fulfil the Memorandum of Understanding, entered with ASUU in 2009, where government promised to release N100 billion out of the N500o billion it agreed to pay.

Also in Awka, ASUU yesterday urged EFCC to prevail on the executive secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okogie to account for the N100billion annual stabilization fund provided by FG for the improvement of facilities in government owned universities.

Dr. Chidi Osuagwu, chairman of the Nsukka zone of ASUU, at a briefing on the on-going strike by the university lecturers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka accused the NUC boss of being a cog in the wheel of university education, saying that the strike would not have been necessary if the annual stabilization fund was properly managed.

According to Dr Osuagwu, the rumours that the on-going strike will be called off tomorrow is embarrassing to ASUU. He maintained that the strike would continue unless the 2009 FG and ASUU agreement was fully implemented.

The inevitable question is what the plight of Nigerian students is even as these two giants continue to disagree???
