While the minister of education hopes the strike would soon be called off, the minister of finance says government has no resources to meet ASUU's demands and chairman Needs Implementation Committee says some progress has been made as the new episode of ASUU Strike unfolds.

The minister of education, professor Ruqayyatu Rufa'i on Monday while speaking at the mid-term review meeting of the four-year strategic plan of her ministry disclosed her hopes that the meeting between ASUU and FG committee yesterday would go a long way in resolving the crisis.

40 days into ASUU strike

From what seems like just yesterday, the ASUU strike has gone past 40 solid days. While the strike initially pained some who have laid down plans, many of us welcomed the idea of the strike hoping that it will just be another 1 or 2 weeks of freedom from academic wahala, I guess by now we Nigerian students have the same view and ask the same question now, “when will the strike be called off?”

ASUU: No re-negotiation, hopes of strike ending tomorrow shattered

ASUU yesterday rejected Federal Government’s new offer of Enhanced Academic Allowances and insisted that Federal Government should implement the 2009 agreement in full.

Dr Nasir Fagge, national president of ASUU, said that after consultations with branch chairmen of the union on the new government offer, members rejected it saying it amounts to re-negotiations, the opinion of the branch chairmen is that the 2009 agreement should just be implemented rather than making new offers.

ASUU refutes plan to call off strike

As the ASUU strike enters its 27th day, ASUU has shattered the hopes of Nigerian students as it affirms that the news making rounds about ASUU going to call off strike by Thursday is only hypothetical.
ASUU national president Dr. Nasir Fagge expressed his surprise as he heard that the union was going to call off strike on Thursday. This is because according to him the issues between FG and ASUU have not been fully resolved.

Reasons why ASUU strike will last

I write this with a bleeding heart but with a deep sense of reality as a concerned final year student of a Nigerian University

Many people have asked the same question “why is strike a reoccurring decimal in Nigerian educational system?” yet a convincing answer still eludes them. Others have begun to assume that ASUU and Federal Government (FG) actually enjoy the strike; I believe this is not true, though without a convincing reason.

I have looked at the issue from ASUU’s standpoint and from FG’s standpoint and one thing is clear, that the strike which commenced on Wednesday 3rd July is most likely going to last for longer than most of us think.

ASUP calls off strike and gives FG 1 month

After nearly 3 months of Strike, polytechnic students across the country are expected to return to their classrooms as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) suspends its strike today.

ASUP EXCO meets today

There are concrete indications that the 80 day old strike by polytechnics lecturers, under the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, may be called off today, as members of  ASUP’s National Executive Council, NEC, hold an emergency meeting, to evaluate the situation.
